TWITTER FOR YOUR PLN

Last thursday January 24th we held the first twitter for your PLN Day for English language teachers in CFIE Valladolid. It was a great chance to get to know what twitter can do to improve the language fluency, the amount of resources we can count on, and the incredible possibilities that twitter has to create a global classroom.

Eighteen English language specialists created a twitter account, followed the most important teachers around the world, created a paper.li newspaper with a twitter selection and tweeted using the hashtag #twitter4PLN.

The greatest satisfaction of the session was the implication of teachers around the world who encouraged through twitter to join this global teaching community. For instance, we had greetings from Steven W. Anderson ‏ @web20classroom, Vicki Davis ‏ @coolcatteacher & Tom Whitby ‏ @tomwhitby from the USA. Ana Cristina Pratas ‏ @AnaCristinaPrts from Arab Emirates, Michael Graffin ‏ @mgraffin from Australia and Timo Ilomäki ‏ @Ilotimo from Finland.

Twitter offers endless possibilities and it is in our hands to join, learn, share and enjoy learning for the sake of our students. Do not miss the chance to join this global community of educators through Twitter.

This is the blog I used for the session: BLOG.  You can also check all the tweets of the session in PDF format clicking here..

I hope you enjoy it!

THE TWITTER EXPERIMENT

Dr. Rankin, professor of History at UT Dallas, wanted to know how to reach more students and involve more people in class discussions both in and out of the classroom. She had heard of Twitter... She collaborated with a graduate student, Kim Smith, from the Emerging Media and Communications (EMAC) and reached out to EMAC faculty for advice.

As a Graduate student in EMAC he assisted her in The Twitter Experiment and documented the project to share with others.

The feedback is varied, but the lesson for him, as a student, was the importance of a professor's attitude and willingness to try new technologies in the classroom, especially a more traditional class such as History. It was a great pleasure to assist Dr. Rankin with this.

He documented the experiment and used it in his digital video class with Professor Dean Terry, @therefore, and assisted Dr. Rankin in the experiment as a part of his collaboration and content creation course with Dan Langendor, @dlangendorf.

It was a great work with Dr. Rankin - a forward-thinking professor open to the intelligent use of new media.

This is really a great initiative. Could we use it with our Bachillerato students in Spain? Share your thoughts if you wish, posting a comment.

PERSONAL LEARNING NETWORK

Share on Twitter first. Twitter reigns king, for now.  Anything can change with technology, but Twitter is the most commonly used tool among academics for expanding PLNs.  LinkedIn, Facebook, and Google+ also provide access to different types of networks. Later, you can use other tools to further expand and manage your network, such as Skype and Google tools. Many new platforms are emerging so stay current by reading tech or social media news on a site such as, Mashable. by Tessedel.
